| COSMIC 1001: Receiving News from the Future of Space Exploration is an interactive moving-image installation built upon generative artificial intelligence, historical archives, and the language of news media. Taking the history of human space exploration as its point of departure, the work reorganizes real aerospace events into a news-based archive and invites audiences to imagine possible futures through AI-generated reporting. Technically, the installation combines a structured archive of real space exploration records with a generative pipeline for multimodal news production. Historical missions, celestial bodies, spacecraft, and discovery events are organized into a searchable database that functions as the system’s archival foundation. Visitors can browse this archive and then submit a question about the future, or select parameters such as year, target celestial body, and mission name. Based on these inputs, the system uses generative AI to produce a speculative “future news report,” including a headline, article text, visual imagery, short moving-image content, voice narration, and an indication of the scenario’s potential feasibility. In this way, the work connects archival retrieval, natural language generation, image and video synthesis, and audiovisual presentation within a single interactive experience. The installation does not seek to predict the future. Instead, it treats the future as a public space that can be discussed, imagined, and collectively constructed. In this work, news serves both as an archival form and as an interface for future imagination. Through familiar formats such as news webpages, broadcast-style moving images, and timeline-based structures, visitors are no longer positioned as distant viewers of the grand narrative of space exploration. Rather, they enter an unrealized moment as “receivers of future news,” reading, listening to, watching, and evaluating a possible event in humanity’s cosmic future. The central visual environments of the work are the news-generation page and the “Future Tunnel.” All future news items generated by visitors are stored and displayed within a shared spatial visualization interface. Each generated news image appears as a possible future that can be approached and explored, distributed throughout the space according to its imagined time and estimated plausibility. As audience participation continues, individual questions accumulate into a collective archive of future imagination. The installation thus transforms personal inquiry into a shared and evolving public landscape—one that reflects diverse visions of space exploration, technological development, and humanity’s capacity to imagine what lies ahead. |
